Metalcore ist der "metallische" Trend der Stunde. At The Gates hätten sich bestimmt nicht At The Gates genannt, wenn sie hätten vorausahnen können, dass diese Namenswahl uns heutzutage eine unglaubliche Flut an Bands beschert, deren Namen mehr oder weniger sinnlose Halb- und Viertelsätze sind. Ein Ende ist nicht in Sicht, und jetzt schwappt das Elend sogar in den Black Metal über. Der Weg einer Freiheit nennen die Übeltäter ihr Projekt; dass die Typen ansonsten in einer Metalcoretruppe werkeln, dürfte keine Überraschung sein. Das Ende ist nahe.
Oder eben auch nicht. Allen Äusserlichkeiten und - durchaus berechtigten! - Vorurteilen zum Trotz ist Der Weg einer Freiheit ein Debüt gelungen, das man in zehn Jahren in einem Atemzug mit "Unter dem Banner der Nordwinde" und "Grátr" nennen könnte. Natürlich immer unter dem Vorbehalt, dass die Jungs sich bis dahin nicht komplett zum Affen machen, aber das ist ja nun beim besten Willen kein metalcorespezifischer Vorbehalt und schon gar kein Grund, vorliegende Scheibe zu ignorieren, zumindest in meinem Universum nicht. Lässt man sich vom Drumherum nicht irritieren, so kann man sich an über vierzig Minuten erfreulich unmodischen Black Metals erfreuen. "Der Weg einer Freiheit" klingt in erster Linie latent schwedisch, sprich flott und melodisch, mit etwas gutem Willen kann man aber auch allerhand Einflüsse von dem heraushören, was im deutschen BM gut und teuer ist. Vor allem das Helrunar-Debüt und die folgende Split hat man bei DWEF wohl des öfteren gehört, die eine oder andere Melodie würde auch bei Drautran keine schlechte Figur machen. Das zur Epik neigende Material ist durchgehend ziemlich eingängig, doch sorgen die Gitarren für genügend Tiefgang, um das Ganze nicht in Richtung Gedudel abdriften zu lassen. Besonders erfreulich und erstaunlich ist dabei die Tatsache, dass die Scheibe über die komplette Spielzeit nicht absackt, sondern im Gegenteil mit jeder Menge Höhepunkten aufwartet, zu deren Aufzählung ich jetzt aber zu faul bin. Stattdessen will ich mich damit begnügen festzuhalten, dass derlei vollendete Debüts wie "Der Weg einer Freiheit" äusserst selten und deshalb umso wertvoller sind.
Nachdem wir nun festgestellt haben, dass es Der Weg einer Freiheit musikalisch absolut draufhaben, will ich die Aufmerksamkeit noch auf ein paar Kleinigkeiten lenken, die zumindest mir das Projekt sehr sympatisch erscheinen lassen. Zum einen ist den beiden Protagonisten die eigene Musik nicht egal, was der sehr sorgfältig programmierte Stromtrommler beweist. Es gibt Leute, die weniger Aufwand durch bösere Fotos oder matschigen Klang kaschiert hätten. Ausserdem bietet die Truppe die Scheibe beinahe für lau an, was von einer Einstellung zeugt, die im ach so unkommerziellen BM beileibe keine Selbstverständlichkeit ist. In diesem Sinne und angesichts dieses Ergebnisses warte ich schon gespannt auf die nächsten BM-Projekte aus dem Metalcorelager. |

Metalcore is the "metallic" trend of the hour. At The Gates probably would not have called themselves At The
Gates if they were able to foresee that this type of band names now causes us an unbelievable flood of bands
whose names are consisting of more or less pointless half or even quarter sentences. An end to this is not in
sight and now the misery even takes over the Black Metal genre. Der Weg einer Freiheit is what the delinquents
are calling their project; that these guys are also playing in a Metalcore group should be no surprise. The
end is near.
Or maybe not. Despite all formalities and - by all means justified! - prejudices, Der Weg einer Freiheit has
succeeded in making an album that could be called alongside with "Unter dem Banner der Nordwinde" and "Grátr"
in ten years. Of course under the premise that they do not make a complete ass of themselves by then but this
is not a specifically "Metalcore"-bound caveat by all means and most definitely not a reason to ignore this
very disc here, at least not in my universe. So if one does not voluntarily get irrtitated by all the
trappings, over forty minutes of pleasingly untrendy Black Metal is what the listener gets as a reward. First
and foremost, "Der Weg einer Freiheit" sounds latenly Swedish, that is fast and melodic; however, with a bit
of good will, one can also discern all sorts of influences of what makes German Black Metal really worthwhile.
Most of all, the debut from Helrunar and the subsequent split must have been in the band's stereo quite often,
some melodies on here also would have not made a bad impression on anything by Drautran. The towards epic
atmospheres tending material is continuously catchy but the guitars deliver sufficient amounts of depth in
order not to let the whole thing drift off towards being mere tootling. The fact that the entire disc does not
have any flaws but in fact reveals a lot of highlights to the listener is really pleasing and astonishing,
although I am too lazy to list them all now. Instead, I want to concentrate on stating that such perfected
debuts like "Der Weg einer Freiheit" are extremly rare and thus making them much worthier.
So after we ascertained now that Der Weg einer Freiheit are top-notch musically, I want to turn the spotlights
on some minor things that let this project shine in a very plesant light for me. First, both protagonists do
care about their music, proved by the accurately programmed drum computer. There are people who would have
concealed this by more evil pictures or a muddy sound. Furthermore, the band offers this disc almost for free
which shows an attitude that can not be taken for granted in the oh so uncommercial Black Metal genre at all.
With this in mind and due to this outcome, I am curious about what other Black Metal projects are coming from
the Metalcore direction.
