Irland. Primordial, Geasa, Arcane Sun. Mehr nicht? Sicher gibt es da noch einiges, was mir gerade nicht einfällt oder
was ich gar nicht erst kenne. Doch selbst bei einem Bekenntnis zu regionaler Ignoranz sind ganze drei Bands ziemlich
wenig. Ein wenig Nachforschung ergibt dann auch, dass in Irland rein zahlenmäßig nur ein Zehntel der Metalcombos
unterwegs sind, die es im noch kleineren Finnland gibt. Éire ist in Sachen Masse eine ähnlich beeindruckende
Metalnation wie Serbien, Bulgarien oder Venezuela. In diesem Sinne ist es bei allem Gerede, dass es auf der BM-Karte
keine weißen Flecken mehr gibt, durchaus ein kleines Ereignis, dass mir eine irische Band über den Weg läuft.
Altar Of Plagues stilistisch festzunageln, ist nicht ganz einfach. Die Truppe wurde je nach Schreiberling schon mit
den unterschiedlichsten Bands verglichen, von WitTR über VBE und Thorns bis hin zu Withered (US). Ich selbst würde am
ehesten Parallelen zu "Nothing Left To Fight For" ziehen wollen, denn diese postindustrielle, urbane Atmosphäre
verbindet AoP nicht unwesentlich mit Malleus Maleficarums aktuellem Werk. Lantlôs würden wohl gern ähnlich wirken, um
mal ein jüngeres Beispiel zu nennen; wie diese setzen auch Altar Of Plagues auf ruhige Passagen, die man heute wohl
Post Rock nennen muss, die aber natürlich nichts sind als genau das: ruhige Passagen. Jenseits reiner Stimmungen sind
oben genannte WitTR auch kein übler Anhaltspunkt. Mit denen verbindet die Iren ein Hang zu episch-ausladenden Liedern,
die von ziemlich melodischen (und in beiden Fällen recht genialen) Leadgitarren geprägt werden. Allerdings wird die
an sich durchaus ähnliche Musik anders in Szene gesetzt. Wesentlich roher ist die Produktion ausgefallen, nicht warm
und umschmeichelnd, sondern kalt und widerborstig, was zusammen mit kurzen Indu-Ambient-Schnipseln für jene
bedrückende urbane Stimmung sorgt, die Lantlôs gerne hätten und die AoP von WitTR so sehr unterscheidet.
"Sol", trotz 33 Minuten Spielzeit offiziell eine EP, ist ein beeindruckendes Werk einer enorm vielversprechenden
Band. Es mag in Irland nur wenige Metalcombos geben, aber immerhin sind diese wenigen überdurchschnittlich gut. Altar
Of Plagues ist auf jeden Fall ein Name, den man sich merken sollte. |

Ireland. Primordial, Geasa, Arcane Sun. Not more? There are surely some more that I can't recall right now or don't
even know yet. But even with this confession of local ignorance, three bands are not much. Then, some research by me
surfaces that Ireland has in number one-tenth of Metal combos of the even smaller Finland. So when it comes to mass,
Éire shares the same awesome quantity with Serbia, Bulgaria or Venezuela. Apart from all the talking that there are
no blank spots on the map of Black Metal anymore, it is quite an event to come across an Irish band.
To pinpen Altar Of Plagues stylistically is not quite easy. This group has already been compared to the most different
bands from WitTR to VBE, Thorns and even the US version of Withered. I would rather draw lines towards "Nothing Left
To Fight For" here because of this post-industrial, urban atmosphere which is not that far away from Malleus
Maleficarum's latest effort. Lantlôs - just to bring up a newer name to the table - would like to sound like this
here; like Altar Of Plagues, they also have calm parts in their sound that could be defined as Post Rock but which
are nonetheless nothing but calm parts really. When going beyond all moods, WitTR are not a bad hint either: The
Irish musicians are also having epic, wide songs that are remarkable due to their quite melodic (and in both cases
genious) lead guitars. But the surely similar music gets spotted from another sonic angle. While the production has
turned out much rawer, not warm or flattering but much more cold and sharp which - together with the short Industrial
Ambient pieces - spreads this gloomy and urbane mood that Lantlôs would like to have and which divides Altar Of
Plagues from WitTR.
"Sol", despite being 33 minutes long and thus an EP, is an impressing work of a promising band. There may be few
Metal combos in Ireland - but they are nevertheless extraordinarily good. Altar Of Plagues are surely a name to be
dealt with in the future.
