Ist das nicht schön? Musik verbindet sagt man und selbst als Deutscher gelangt man international zu neuer
Akzeptanz. Ob die Gründe dafür nun durchweg vorteilsschwanger sind, sei mal dahingestellt. Zumindest bemerkt
man im Black Metal ein wachsendes Interesse an deutscher Geschichte und Kultur, was sich vor allem durch den
Gebrauch der Sprache ausdrückt. Das letzte Gespann, das sich daran versuchte, sind die Schweden Sønderfall.
Wie der Titel dieser Mini-CD vermuten lässt, rekapituliert man textlich die dramatische Geschichte um das
Schlachtschiff Bismarck, insbesondere die Operation Rheinübung.
Soviel zum Hintergrund. Musikalisch geht's dann, zur Kriegsthematik passend, wütend in die Vollen. Holterdipolter
rumpelt das Duo durchgehend in oberen Geschwindigkeitsregionen über das Kattegat. Nur vereinzelt wird die
wuchtige Melange durch Breaks aufgelockert. Dabei verbrät man so einige treibende, sofort zündende Riffs und
schafft es, den Tracks sogar eine gewisse Eigenständigkeit einzuflößen. Zu übermütig möchte ich dennoch nicht
sein. Um unumgängliche Kracher zu sein, fehlt den Kompositionen noch der letzte Dreh. Gelungen und grundsolide
ist "Schlachtschiff Bismarck" aber allemal, was bei dem Mix an fies sirrenden Gitarren, grimmigem Gesang und
hypnotischem Drumming auch kein Wunder ist. Soundtechnisch weiß man ebenfalls zu gefallen, fand eine old
schoolige Klanghülle, die sich überzeugend aus Transparenz und Rohheit zusammensetzt. So manche Sprachdefizite
im CD-Inlay und der furchtbare Akzent (man höre die Einleitung von "Blut") sind zwar eher peinlich denn
nutzbringend, aber darüber schau ich mal großzügig hinweg.

Isn't that lovely? It is a popular saying that "music connects" and even a German now gets sudden acceptance
worldwide. Whether the reasons for this are beneficial is an open question. At least one can notice a rising
interest in german history and culture, mainly in the use of german expressions. The last band that dabbled
in trying this are Sønderfall from Sweden. As the title of the Mini-CD suggests, this group picks up the
dramatic story of the battleship "Bismarck", particularly the "Operation Rheinübung".
So much for the background. Musically they put the pedal to the metal, fitting the topic of war. This duo
permanently plays at full throttle over the "Kattegat". Only a few times this mighty mixture gets some
variation by using breaks. In doing so, you get to hear marvellously working riffs. Therefore it ain't really
a surprise that a bunch of tracks actually are sounding well and have an independent touch. But I don't want
to be too high-spirited here: They need the last puzzle piece to create awesome songs although "Schlachtschiff
Bismarck" is a very solid record - especially the mixture of harsh guitars, furious vocals and hypnotic
drumming. Therefore the old-school-production is convincing. Spelling mistakes in the CD-inlay and the
horrible accent (listen to the introduction of "Blut") are rather embarrassing than profitable but I can
tolerantly overlook this failure.
Conclusion: A strong mini-album!
