Battles In The North (1995)

Die "Pure Holocaust" wird gemeinhin als das beste Album der Nordmänner genannt. Wie dem auch sei, in punkto Härte und Genialität stellt "Battles In The North" für mich die absolute Referenz dar. Die Songs brechen wie ein aus den Fugen geratener Blizzard herein und lassen einem den Atem gefrieren. Die Kälte und frostige Atmosphäre, die hier erzeugt wird, ist nicht mehr zu überbieten. Rasende Double-Bass Parts schlagen einem wie Hagelkörner ins Gesicht, die Gitarren entfachen einen infernalen Schneesturm, aus dem es kein Entrinnen zu geben scheint und über diesem Inferno thronend die abartigste, monotonste, am absoluten Nullpunkt angesiedelte Stimme von Abbath. Trotzdem gelingt es Immortal immer wieder, die Monotonie zu durchbrechen, dem Song grad soviel Harmonie zu verleihen, dass die Strukturen erkennbar bleiben, aufgelockert von wohlplatzierten Breaks. "Battles In The North", "Cursed Realms Of The Winterdemons", "At The Stormy Gates Of Mist", "Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)"... jeder Song für sich ein kleines Meisterwerk. Diese Scheibe kann man sich einfach nicht überhören. Ein zeitloses Stück Black Metal und ganz oben auf der Liste meiner Alltime-Favs.

"Pure Holocaust" is commonly called the best album of those Norsemen. However, concerning brilliancy and hardness "Battles In The North" is the absolute reference for me. The songs befall like a Blizzard and make your breath freeze. The deadness and the cold atmosphere created by Immortal cannot be overbid. Raging double-bass parts hit your face like hailstones, the guitars arouse an infernal snowstorm and it seems like there's no hope for escape. Enthroned above this inferno Abbath's abnormal, monotonous voice residing at the absolute zero. Nevertheless Immortal manage to break the monotony, to bestow the songs as much harmony so the structures stay recognizable, lossen by some well arranged breaks. "Battles In The North", "Cursed Realms Of The Winterdemons", "At The Stormy Gates Of Mist", "Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)"... every song is a little masterpiece to me. You simply cannot miss this record. A timeless piece of Black Metal, on the very top of my alltime favourites list.
