Basiliskk war eine sprunghafte Truppe. Fast täglich wurde die Netzpräsens komplett geändert und letztendlich
musste der eigene Name dran glauben, noch bevor das erste Demo in ansprechender Form veröffentlicht wurde.
Das ist schade, denn "Obligatory Relinquishment (Of The Ceremonial Dagger)" war ein starker Anfang, der
sicher ein größeres Publikum verdient hätte. Doch immerhin sind die meisten alten Lieder jetzt als Bonus auf
dem ersten Lebenszeichen von Horn Of Valere zu finden, der hoffentlich längerlebigen neuen Inkarnation von
Basiliskk.
Dieses Tondokument trägt den Namen "Blood Of The Heathen Ancients" und belegt, dass der Namenswechsel mehr
ist als die altbekannte Raider-Twix-Geschichte. Denn wenn man sich auch nicht komplett neu erfunden hat, so
wurde doch der Schwerpunkt der Musik deutlich verschoben. Fast verschwunden ist die vordergründige Aggression
des Vorgängers. Das bedeutet nun nicht, dass HoV jetzt weniger kraftvoll zur Sache gehen würden oder gar zahm geworden sind. Vielmehr ist "BOTHA" ein sehr hypnotisches Album, das langsam Spannung aufbaut, um diese
dann umso gewaltiger zu entladen. Beim ersten Durchlauf mag diese Vorgehensweise noch eher ereignisarm wirken,
um es mal vornehm auszudrücken. Doch auf Dauer kann man sich der unterschwelligen Energie des Materials nicht
entziehen. Hört euch nur mal "Ageless Winds Of Infinite Wisdom" an, ein episch dahinfließendes Stück, das
Schritt um Schritt auf einen geradezu ohrgiastischen Höhepunkt zusteuert. Große Klasse.
Der "Rest" des Albums braucht sich hinter diesem wunderbaren Stück nordischen Black Metals nicht zu
verstecken. Unterstüztzt von einer Produktion mit hörbarem Bass und dem wie gewohnt leicht in den
Hintergrund gemischten Gesang sorgen alle vier neuen Lieder für sehr gute Unterhaltung. Als Dreingabe gibt
es jene bereits erwähnten drei Viertel des Basiliskk-Demos und eine Coverversion von "Call From The Grave".
Diese ist zwar nicht schlecht, aber auch nichts Besonderes - das Original ist eben immer noch das Original.
Das Stück hätte man sich für meinen Geschmack getrost schenken können und stattdessen lieber das komplette
Bandschaffen auf die CD packen sollen. Aber das ist letztendlich nur ein kleiner Schönheitsfehler. |

Basiliskk was a restless band. The website was altered almost on a daily basis, and in the end even the
name had to go before they even managed to properly release the first demo. That is a shame because
"Obligatory Relinquishment (Of The Ceremonial Dagger)" was a strong first strike which would have deserved
a wider audience. At least most of the older material has now been included in the first output by Horn
Of Valere, the new incarnation of Basiliskk which will hopefully live to see more releases.
"Blood Of The Heathen Ancients" shows that the name change in question is more than merely a facelifting
operation. The band may not have re-invented themselves completely but the musical focus has noticably
changed. Almost gone is the upfront aggression of the predecessor. This doesn't imply that HoV's approach
would be less powerful, or that this RI horde ist getting old and soft. But "BOTHA" is a very hypnotizing
album and its songs build tension only slowly to explode in all the more overwhelming climaxes. During
the first listen this approach may seem somewhat uneventful - to say the least. But in the long run one
can't escape the underlying energy of HoV's compositions. Just listen to "Ageless Winds of Infinite
Wisdom", a steadily flowing epic of a song which - slowly but unstoppable - approaches a bursting peak
which won't leave anybody untouched (if they are alive). Quite magnificient.
The "remaining" material is well up to par with this wonderful piece of Nordic-styled Black Metal.
Supported by a strong production with an audible bass and vocals mixed slightly into the background, all
four new songs ensure great BM entertainment. As a bonus we get (as mentioned earlier) three quarters
of the Basiliskk demo and a Cover of Bathory's "Call Form The Grave". The latter one is not bad at all
but nothing special either - quite frankly I think there is no way anybody will ever get even close to
the original. Personally, I would have left this cover off the record and included the missing Basiliskk
song instead. But - all in all - this is just a tiny detail and thus doesn't change the simple fact that
"Blood Of The Heathen Ancients" is a great album.
