Nouveau Gloaming (CD 2005)

:: Review I ::

Tja, da hab ich mich wohl in die Nesseln gesetzt. War ich angesichts der Hörproben auf der Internetseite der Band noch recht begeistert, muss ich beim Hören der kompletten CD dann leider feststellen, dass das gebotene Material so gar nicht meinem Geschmack entspricht. Denn die Samples versprachen rockigen Black Metal à la neuere Darkthrone, wie er in Norwegen wohl durchaus beliebt ist und der mir wirklich Lust auf mehr gemacht hatte.
Nun muss ich aber hören, dass bei den andern Liedern sehr oft gar nerviger Klargesang eingesetzt wird, der mich des öfteren an irgendwelche Psychedelic Bands denken lässt und den Geruch von Marihuana vor meiner geistigen Nase aufsteigen lässt. "Hey, klingt ja wie Ved Buens Ende" sagte ein Kumpel von mir, als er meine Wohnung betrat und den Klang von "Nouveau Gloaming" vernahm und darauf freudig erregt lächelte. Naja, wenigstens ihm schien es zu gefallen. Wir ihr sehen könnt, fällt mir einfach gar nichts zu dieser Art von Musik ein, denn sie entspricht einfach nicht meinem Musikgeschmack, ohne dabei allerdings schlecht zu sein. Die Musiker beherrschen allesamt ihre Instrumente, eine Anbiederung an irgendwelche Trends ist nicht ersichtlich und ich kann mir gut denken, dass Leute, die auf Bands wie VBE und neuere Satyricon (teilweise auch Darkthrone) stehen, viel Spaß mit dieser Veröffentlichung haben werden.
Ich für meinen Teil finde aber einfach keinen Zugang zu dieser Scheibe und möchte mich deshalb einer Wertung enthalten und euch einfach empfehlen, in die Platte reinzulauschen, solltet ihr auf erwähnte Bands abfahren. Nun ja, mein Kumpel kann sich wenigstens auf eine Gratispromo freuen.

Well, I'm afraid I've stepped right into a mine field. Initially impressed by the samples on their homepage, I unfortunately had to realize that the complete songs on CD don't fit my taste at all. The samples promised some kind of Black'n'Roll à la newer Darkthrone which seems to be popular in Norway and got me interested.
But now I have to listen to annoying, clear vocals that appear in some of the other songs. They remind me of those "psychedelic" bands, and I can sense a faint smell of dope in the air. "Hey, this sounds like Ved Buens Ende", a friend said, smiling enthusiastically, when he entered my flat and heard "Noveau Gloaming". Oh well, at least he seemed to enjoy it. As you may have realized by now, I really can't come up with anything reasonable concerning this album. It's really not bad, but absolutely not my cup of tea. Or blood. The musicians involved all seem to be able to play their instruments, the band doesn't whore out too openly to any current trend, and I can very well imagine that people into VBE or newer Satyricon (or Darkthrone, or any other Moonfog band) could actually like this release.
For me, however, this record does nothing, and for that reason I am really the wrong person to judge it. All I can do is encourage you to give it a try if you happen to like the bands I mentioned. Well, at least that friend of mine can look forward to a free promo now.

"Nouveau Gloaming"? "The Cotton Optic"? Ob der eigenwilligen Titel kommen dem Rezensenten Solefald in den Sinn. Oder späte Fleurety. Zumindest erstere waren am Anfang ihres Weges verhältnismäßig aufregend und so stelle ich mich dem Album des norwegisch-englischen Projektes in banger Vorfreude, auf Großes hoffend, mir der eher geringen Aussichten auf Erfüllung dieser Hoffnungen jedoch stets bewusst: gebranntes Kind scheut das Feuer.
Das erste Stück ist dann auch eher dazu geeignet, den zum Zynischen neigenden Skeptiker in mir zu bestätigen. Neonorwegischer Black Metal steht auf dem Programm und Böswillige könnten behaupten, auch bei Code hätte ein gewisser Sigurd W. seine Finger im Spiel. Sicher, rein "objektiv" ist das Lied ganz passabel, aber in Anbetracht meiner Wünsche relativ ernüchternd. Das folgende "Brass Dogs" zeigt dann jedoch, dass "The Cotton Optic" kaum mehr ist als eine mit Kalkül plazierte "Hitsingle". Klagender Klargesang setzt ein und befördert uns direkt zu "Those Who Caress The Pale" oder "Written In Waters" - und wer diese Werke schätzt, dürfte im Folgenden auch mit "N.G." glücklich werden. Neben dem um eine Dimension erweiterten Gesang bricht auch das schwarzmetallische Fundament aus dem charttauglichen Rahmen des Albumauftakts, das Rockig-Gefällige weicht epischem Black Metal, die Musik ist emotionaler, aufwühlend beinahe, und besitzt wesentlich mehr Tiefgang. Im Verlaufe des Albums bewegt sich der Gesang zur Abwechslung auch mal in Richtung Bergtatt-Garm, um die majestätisch dahinfließenden Songs adäquat zu begleiten. Und der Wirkung dieser Mixtur kann zumindest ich mich nur schwer entziehen. Die Lieder schlagen melodische Widerhaken in die Seele des Hörers, der auf den Schwingen von Codes Kreationen in fremde, teilweise bizarr anmutende Welten gleitet, die zuvor neben VBE wohl nur auf "The Linear Scaffold" erkundet wurden. Zwischendurch wird auch mal zünftig zur Attacke geblasen, aber zu verkaufsfördernder Einfachheit kehrt die Band - glücklicherweise! - keinerzeit zurück. Vielmehr bilden die direkteren Stücke die perfekte Ergänzung zur episch-weitschweifigen Seite der Band.
Die Synthese dieser unterschiedlichen Charakterzüge gelingt auf "Nouveau Gloaming" so gut, dass sie den Hörer sogar über den ersten Stolperschritt hinwegsehen lässt. Unterm Strich ist Code nämlich das erste Album in einer halben Ewigkeit gelungen, das Stilelemente der genannten Vorreiter überzeugend verarbeitet.

"Nouveau Gloaming"? "The Cotton Optic"? Those odd titles make Solefald cross the reviewer's mind. Or latter day Fleurety. At least the creators of "The Linear Scaffold" were rather inspired (and inspiring) at the beginning of their journey, and thus I face the Norwegian-English duo's album with high expectations, but apprehensive at the same time: the chances to see high hopes actually fulfilled are quite low after all; this wouldn't be the first band to produce pretentious hot air.
And the first song then really is the kind that make the cynic in me rejoice. Neo-Norwegian Black Metal is the name of the game, and the mean-spirited could easily claim that Code is just another offspring of the mind of Sigurd W.. Sure, "objectively" speaking the track is not so bad, but considering what I expected and wanted, it's quite sobering. Luckily the following "Brass Dogs" proves that the opener is not much more than a cleverly placed "hit single". Wailing clean vocals set in and beam us back in time, straight towards "Those Who Caress The Pale" or "Written In Waters" - and whoever likes those masterpieces will also appreciate "Nouveau Gloaming". But not only the vocals gain another dimension, also the Black Metal foundation no longer fits "Top of the Pops", easy-listening Black'n'Roll makes room for epic Black Metal, the music is far more emotional, passionate almost, has more depth. During the album, the vocals also shift towards Bergtatt-Garm for a change to adequately support the majestically flowing songs. And the impact of this mixture is something I can hardly resist. The songs drive melodic hooks into the listener's soul, on the wings of Code's creations one can fly into dominions that have only been reached by VBE or "The Linear Scaffold" before. Every now and then, the band even rides a swift attack, but the commercial simplicity of the opener - luckily - doesn't return. Those straighter tracks are rather the ideal counterweight to the epic, adventurous side of the band.
On "Nouveau Gloaming", the synthesis of those almost contradicting features succeeds so well that one can even get over the bumpy beginning. At the end of the day, Code have created the first album in a really long time that convincingly picks up where the few truely avantgarde bands of old have left.
