CATAMENIA

Winternight Tragedies (CD 2005)

Christopher Street Day bei Myrrthronth?

:: English Version ::

Christopher Street Day at Myrrthronth? Admittedly, this impression is not too far-fetched as Catamenia were rather concerned with rainbow flags than battles axes in the past. But - surprise, surprise! - "Winternight Tragedies" is close enough to Black Metal to generate some interest among the most liberal of our readers.
Naturally, also this latest album isn't exactly "Panzerdivision Catamenia" but at least the gay pride protagonists in the band keep it down and manage not to cause much belly ache. Nowadays, one only seldomly gets to hear happy Heavy Metal rhythms anymore - a small step for humanity, but a giant leap for Catamenia. And even though the keyboards still play a major role, some real guitar melodies have found their way onto the album.
To sum it up, one could say that these Finns have steered away from their überkitsch of the past towards a more Dimmu B. like direction. On one hand, this is an improvement, on the other hand one has to say that they didn't quite avoid the many MeloBM traps which have swallowed legions of bands to date. Standardized boredom takes over quite frequently, and then it is rather obvious that Catamenia still need to work hard in order to become a band one could actually take seriously. "Verikansa" is the one song on this album to show how such a development might sound like. This track, too, dances quite close to the abyss of kitsch, but - miraculously - never falls off the cliff. It is sugar without immediate caries, the kind of kitsch that can be quite acceptable for a change. On the sixth album, we thus have the first Catamenia song one can listen to more than once - maybe not much, but certainly better than nothing at all.
