In der Reihe "Aufstrebende Neulinge" wollen wir uns heute den Amerikanern von Basiliskk widmen. Die Jungs aus
Rhode Island haben im letzten Jahr ein Demo namens "Obligatory Relinquishment (Of The Ceremonial Dagger)"
veröffentlicht, mit dem wir uns im Folgenden befassen wollen.
Auf ihrem ersten Tondokument offerieren Basiliskk dem Hörer direkten, brutalen BM. In Sachen Geschwindigkeit
gibt man sich recht variabel, Geprügel findet sich ebenso auf dem Silberling wie ausgiebige mittelschnelle
Abschnitte. Dabei hat die Band jedoch hörbar darauf geachtet, es nie an Durchschlagskraft mangeln zu lassen.
Dementsprechend wurde auf Kinkerlitzchen wie Keyboards oder akustische Gitarren völlig verzichtet und auch
die ansprechend kraftvoll-rohe Produktion unterstützt dieses Ansinnen. Als ungefähren Vergleich würde ich die
Italiener Adversam nennen wollen, allerdings - wie schon erwähnt - ohne Tastenunterstützung, wodurch Basiliskk
im direkten Vergleich schnörkelloser wirken. Und wenn man die Demostatistik betrachtet - vier Stücke in 34
Minuten -, dann wird zudem deutlich, dass der kompositorische Ansatz der Amerikaner viel epischer ist.
"Obligatory Relinquishment..." überzeugt durch grimmig-aggressive Riffs im von mir sehr geschätzten
Post-Immortal-Permafrost-Stil, man kann der Band jedoch nicht vorwerfen, ein Plagiat zu sein. Dafür sorgen
einerseits einige melancholische Leadgitarren und andererseits der stellenweise sehr markante Einsatz des
Viersaiters. Besonders beim Titelsong sorgt die Verbindung dieser Elemente für den Eindruck relativer
Originalität. Abgerundet wird das Demo durch patenten Kreischgesang, der leicht hintergründig abgemischt
wurde, was mir recht gut gefällt.
Wenn man die Band zu ihrem Debüt befragt, bekommt man Kommentare der Art "Fuck that demo! It's old and tired".
Und für den in naher Zukunft erscheinenden Nachfolger verspricht Bandsprachrohr Andrew, dass dieser "MUCH
stronger" ausfallen wird. In Anbetracht dieses wirklich gelungenen Einstandes muss man also echte Großtaten
erwarten. Ob diese Hoffnungen erfüllt werden können, weiß ich natürlich (noch) nicht, aber die Wartezeit kann
man mit "Obligatory Relinquishment..." ganz wunderbar überbrücken. |

Today in our series "Promising Newcomers": the American outfit Basiliskk. Last year, those guys
from Rhode Island have released a demo entitled "Obligatory Relinquishment (Of The Ceremonial
Dagger)" which will be the subject of the following review.
On this, their (to my knowledge) first recording, Basiliskk present straight-forward, brutal Black
Metal. Speedwise we are on the more variable side of things, the demo features fast attacks as
well as extensive mid-tempo parts. Still, the band has clearly paid attention to never lose or
compromise the hard-hitting nature of their compositions. Thus, you will not find gimmicks such
as keyboards or acustic guitars on this recording. Also the raw and nevertheless powerful
production supports their approach to music. If I had to mention a comparison it would be the
Italian band Adversam, just without the keys. And looking at the demo statistics - four songs in
34 minutes - one will clearly see that the Americans are much more epic in their compositions.
"Obligatory Relinquishment..." manages to convince the listener with grim and aggressive riffs in
the post-Immortal-Permafrost-style which I happen to like a lot. Still Basiliskk are far from
being copycats, thanks in particular to some melancholic lead guitars and the prominent bass work.
Especially the title track sounds relatively original in combining these elements. Competent
screamy vocals, mixed slightly into the background, complete the music on this demo.
When asking the band about their debut effort you will get answers along the lines of "Fuck that
demo! It's old and tired", and they promise the next release to be "MUCH stronger". Considering
the rather high level of this first attempt I guess we are in for something really great then.
But you never know, and for the moment being "Obligatory Relinquishment..." is good enough to make
waiting for what is yet to come a not too unpleasant option. |
